Softening Faux Leather: Formspring.me Question

 img source

from formspring.me:

Have you ever worked with faux leather? If so do you know any ways to soften it up so its not so stiff? thank you! love your blog
Yes, I work with faux leather all the time!

There are of course a lot of different thicknesses and “weights” to faux leather and “softening it up” probably depends on how it is backed. Like does it have a fabric backing? A vinyl backing? Or is it non-backed – i.e., with an unfinished “wrong side”?

If it is backed in fabric or unbacked I think you *could* try to spray some water on the wrong side and hang it to see if this makes it more pliable. (Try on an area that won’t be visible first, as this could cause discoloration or even disintegration.) If the piece is vinyl-backed I would say you’re out of luck.:-( You could also try “conditioning” the leather on the right side using Vinyl Conditioner (http://www.nauticalease.com/products/vinyl.htm) or Mink Oil , which may soften up the piece, at least on the outer side.

I’m not sure how much success you’ll have though since man-made leather is chemically-based and if “pliability” is not engineered into the molecular structure of the piece, I doubt there’s much you could do it, short of pouring more chemicals on it, to make its hand more soft. (I would NOT recommend pouring fabric softener, bleach, or Fiber Etch on it!!)

I think when it comes to working with faux leathers selection is critical – unlike real leather, it’s more limited in its applications depending on its structure, weight, and thickness, since it tends to be impervious to conditioning, stretching, softening, and skivving. Does anyone have any ideas to help this reader out?!

Sorry I can’t be of more help!

My Experience in Japan: Formspring.me Question

from formspring.me:
how long did you live in japan? was there a reason you were in japan in the first place? why did you move back? i have so many questions, sorry.
Hi there!
I’ve lived in Japan 6 years total. My family moved there when I was 11 (back in 1990) for my father’s work. (He was a research chemist.) We lived there 3 years and then we moved back to the States once my father’s contract was up. I finished high school in the U.S. In college I did a year study abroad in Tokyo, and then after I graduated college I went back to Japan to go to animation school for 2 years. Once I graduated I wanted to work in the U.S. (plus my visa was expiring), so I once again moved back to the States. Hope that answers your questions!:-)

I Need to Stay Away from the Jewelry Section at Target…

Clockwise from top: Stone Bib Necklace; Pyramid Studded Cuff (clearance section); Stretch Rhinestone, Silver Chain, and Oxidized Studded Rings Set of 3; Faux Python Cuff Bracelet with Gold Chain and Embellishments (clearance section)

Like really stay away.  Like we’re talking a blockade and police barricade.

Just a few things I picked up the other day at my local Tar-JAY.

The designer for their jewelry must be new (since I can’t find anything online confirming this, I’m just assuming…) because this stuff rocks.  It’s the only way how I can explain how their jewelry (not the designer-collab stuff, just the regular costume jewelry sold at Target) sometime during the last year went from um, “nice” to “omigawd I want every piece right. NOW!!”

I love these edgy cuffs stacked together.  Or apart!

And these rings, which can also be worn separately.  Not too crazy about the rhinestone one, which looks kinda cheap IMHO, but I was thrilled to find the studded one since I’ve been on the hunt ever since Forever 21 stopped making their version.  I also love the chain ring.

The nail polish is, too, from Target – O.P.I’s “Here Today, Aragon Tomorrow.”  A dark jade green that is black in some lights and evergreen in others.  It looks so sinister, even more so than I think black does.  But I digress.

Ahh, the piece de resistance.  This Stone Bib Necklace just looks so opulent and it elevates any outfit to a major ensemble in a flash.

Plus Target just got Temple St. Clair jewelry in, and I’m loving the ladies-who-lunch feel to their bauble drop earrings and jumbled charm bracelets.  Who’s with me on this one??! 😉

Might just have to make a trip back, if I can get around the self-imposed barricade…

I’ve Been Featured in the Times!

No, not the New York Times.  My local newspaper, the Tigard/Tualatin/Sherwood Times!!

Yes, folks – the Tualatin Times ran a feature of me in their latest edition which came out Thursday, Sept. 16.   They included some nice quotes from me about my efforts to undermine established brand names and force everyone to pick up a pair of scissors and start crafting away.  Yay for subversion!!

They also came to my house and had me play dress up (not that they had to twist my arm or anything, LOL!) and filmed me while doing it.  They put together a little video of me blabbering and preening for the camera too.  😉

[blip.tv http://blip.tv/play/g6hEgf29YgI%2Em4v]

No, in all seriousness, I’m so flattered that they did a story on me!  The story was also run in the Beaverton Valley Times as well, so that’s about 26,000 subscribers who got a great big gander of yours truly in that crazy pillowcase skirt of mine when they opened their newspapers yesterday morning. /*o*

Thank you so much for the feature and the fabulous video, guys – I’m beyond words!! 😀 😀 😀

DIY Roundup 4

It’s been a little while since I’ve been able to do these Roundups!

But now I’m back on track with DIY Roundup 4!  First let me share with you 2 pieces I recently made. I saw London-based jewelry brand bex rox featured in Lucky Magazine awhile back (below), and was taken with the idea of weaving ombre-dyed stain cord through the links of heavy curb chain to make a thick necklace.

Lucky Magazine feature on bex rox, January 2010
My version of the woven chain necklace.

I made two: one bright rainbow-colored, and one pastel shades colored!  I can’t decide which one I like better.;-)  And you could try this with leather cord, velvet ribbon, chiffon ribbon, rope…though if you chose something flat like a ribbon to weave through the links, you’d have to deal with the ribbon curling and tangling inamongst the links (which could have a nice result).  You could even make a high Elizabethan chain collar with black leather cord and go goth with it!  Anyway, it’s a cute little technique to try out sometime when you have a little time to kill (it does take awhile, fyi).

So now you get to share your own DIY’s!  If you have a DIY project or tutorial, please feel free to link below!  (However you can only link YOUR OWN PROJECT.  Please do not link others’ projects!)
