Verbmodels has decided to ban super-slim models and actors from its roster, joining growing global ambitions to fight eating disorders such as anorexia.
On the afternoon of October 11, Verb’s senior booker & Israeli entrepreneur Matan Uziel (24) who is best known for creating the advertising corporation Warmhome Media Group, held a press conference and answered questions on suspected anorexia nervosa and bulimia on models, rapidly weight losing, what brings a model to do that, as well as talking on his decisive resistance not to involve any models that deem too slim in his future marketing communications.
“Warmhome Media Group & Verbmodels have both adopted a new global guideline that will require that all their future communications should not use models or actors that are either excessively slim or promote ‘unhealthy’ slimness”, said Uziel on Sunday.
Regarding the question of what is the link between the media’s depiction and skinny models, answered Uziel that “Anna Wintour is one of the most contributing persons for eating disorders among young girls. The media’s obsession with painfully thin fashion models has contributed to the growth in eating disorders among young girls and this should come under the international ethical spotlight after several anorexic models died in the last couple of years. Women’s magazines should be ‘attacked and accused’ of promoting unrealistic body images of exceptionally thin models inspiring others to be exactly the same.”
“We must do everything we can in order to ensure another model won’t fall victim of anorexia. The issue of size zero or “skinny models” has dogged fashion shows and the beauty industry around the world”, added Uziel.
Uziel plans to bring together influential people in the media and fashion worlds who could “begin to challenge some of the assumptions that the only way to be beautiful is to be thin.”
Model pictured above is Isabelle Caro, a French anorexic model who modeled on a billboard in an Italian campaign in 2007 in order to create awareness about anorexia and eating disorders in the modeling industry – as well as to challenge people’s perception that thinness = beauty. I’d personally love to know how they determine if a model is “too thin”… the BMI standards imposed by Madrid in 2006 and many companies recently still seem kind of…lax? Despite what a model’s BMI actually is, some may “look too thin” and still contribute indirectly to the prevalence of eating disorders. It’s kind of like the U.S. Supreme Court’s stance on obscenity, because, regardless of whether someone is too thin by the numbers, this is an instance where you “know it when you see it.”
What do all of you think?

Have you heard of ken & dana design and their b-side battle??
You haven’t???
Well, ken & dana design is a funky web store that specializes in handmade, unique jewelry – offering pieces ranging from the romantic to the avant-garde. They utilize mixed metals, draped chains, semi-precious gemstones, and natural elements to create lines BYLU and b-side, reflecting the grit and glamour of the urban environment. Designers Ken Leung and Dana Chin got their start by way of a fortuitous meeting with Doo.Ri one day – and ended up creating pieces for her runway shows (that’s shows, plural), collaborating on producing showstopping pieces that provide the perfect accent to Doo.Ri’s sculptural, feminine aesthetic.

Their b-side design battle was inspired by New York City’s “Art Battles,” where the designers are challenge themselves to come up with some off-the-dome design.
Each week they design a new work and feature it for a special price (always under $150) for one week ONLY.

above is only $55!
Now, as all of you are probably already aware, I am a sucker for anything sparkly, rough-hewn, asymmetrical – and anything that pairs organic materials with metal. This pendant fits the bill to a T – and I’m already imagining mine twinkling out from beneath a looped beige chunky scarf with gold flecks, layered over a white wifebeater (totally an un-PC name, but you get the idea)…or paired over a vintage flowered dress and layered with some extra-long chains in oxidized gunmetal.
Definitely visit the ken & dana design website (it’s a site inspiring and amazing with its use of eye-catching graphics and fun visuals) and scoop up the Amethyst Pendant while you can…and sign up for their email alerts to hear about the next unique piece offered up for their weekly b-side design battle.
Battle on, design trailblazers, battle on.

(DIY pierced sweatshirt, Claire’s gloves and illusion floating necklace, handmade beaded bracelets,
Hot Topic watch, H & M jeans chain, 7 for All Mankind Ginger LA jeans, Metro7 wedge boots)
Last day of Portland Fashion Week! (Whew! I was soooo ready for it to be done.)
Shooting my own photos again today, so had to be comfy. I bought this (Champion? I think it was) cross-front sweatshirt off the rack, then punched holes randomly around the edge with my rotary leather punch, and added 12 mm jumprings in some of the holes so the fabric looks “pierced.” I then added a black satin ribbon so it looks a little like those tied wrap tops ballet dancers wear. A little. Okay, no.
I think my brother had a pair of gloves like this back in 1984. They were his “Terminator” gloves…and he was 6.
I made all the beaded bracelets on my right arm, just cause I wanted some sparkle and jangle. Good to have when you’re moving a camera around in other people’s faces.

I love these jeans. I want to marry these jeans. These make me look skinnier and like my legs are miles long. Love that I scored then for $67 from BlueBee.com while they were on sale. (And they routinely mark down designer jeans to that price! Originally these ones retail for $190. Right now they have some Earnest Sewns for under $60 and some Frankie Bs for $62…and some Helmut Langs for $82 – marked down from $275!! Holy moley.)
Gotta start on my Fashion Week writeups…coming soon, promise.:-)

(DIY flowered neckpiece, Kenneth Cole new york shirt, J. Crew boxers,
Hudson shorts, unknown tights, Spiral Girl shoes)
As soon as I saw the J. Crew catalog featuring the quirky model below wearing that flower necklace, I knew I had to DIY my own.

Just a combination of silk flowers from the craft store, pearl-edged lace ribbon, a pom-pon, and rolled fabric roses – all hot-glued onto a strip of peach satin voile, and finished with cream satin ribbons. I could wear it as a belt too.
I like my version a lot better than the J. Crew one, which isn’t even available to buy from them anyway.
I also took another cue from the catalog and layered a pair of Hub’s boxers under my shorts. I think white with thin stripes may look better; the blue blends in too much with the denim. I know it’s weird, but I also felt the shirt looked better tucked in to the boxers.

(Claire’s stretch rhinestone bracelets and ring, jumpring tool, and Cartier and Tiffany wedding rings)

My $20 freakin-awesome Spiral Girl studded cone-heel pumps. Full disclosure: I switched these out to the flat boots I wore on Day 2 since I was shooting my own photos this night.

I also went for a little bit of an Edward Scissorhands-look to my hair. It didn’t stay as wet-looking as I wanted it though.
Hope you’re all having a great weekend!
xoxo
