Here Comes the Sun

Vintage pineapple-fiber jacket, RIVETED (my own line) dress, Old Navy belt, department store no-name bag, American Apparel tights in Golden Poppy, Payless boots.

It’s beautiful here in Portland, and apparently we’re going to have sunshine for the next 8 days straight. Ick. I try to spurn the sun as much as possible, feeling that my vampirish-pallor necessitates it. [I burn within minutes or break out in an attractive rash under the sun…or applied to heat…light…emotion…wool…yup, just about anything one can be applied to. Fall is my favorite time of the year.] Meanwhile my garden is going nuts and so I’ve been out and about, trying to control the lush jungle that has sprung up around me. Not so much time for blogging.

But, in honor of the continuous sunshine, I thought to post this – an outfit I wore when Hub and I went out for our 5-yr. anniversary to the Portland restaurant Beast. (Yup, it’s been that long, and yup, it was super-yummy.)

The jacket is vintage…my mother’s mother bought the fabric in the Philippines in the 1950’s or so, and had it made into a jacket-and-evening gown combo. The fabric is made of pineapple fibers (!), dyed to this obnoxious yellow, and has this shimmery look to it. The dye ended up taking in subtle vertical striations (isn’t that a nice word?) and gradations of light to bright yellow. It feels like soft seatbelts to the touch. My mother wore the set to her graduation sometime in the late 60’s…and ended up spilling sauce down the front of the gown; a nice brown stain. I am still trying to figure out how to salvage the gown, and though the jacket is completely the wrong size for me, I still thought it sunshiny and fun.

The dress I made as a sample for my now-defunct line RIVETED‘s Holiday 2007 Collection…it never went into production and that was the last season I produced before I ran out of funds.:-(

Boots are Payless from a couple years ago. Hot pink, slouchy, suede-y…what’s not to love???

If I look tired in the photos – I am…I was about a week and a half into my allergic reaction-pneumonitis-bronchitis trifecta saga that I got the day before going to Hawaii for a friend’s wedding.

I am currently vigorously applying myself to Gossip Girl Season 1 courtesy of Netflix…I feel it requires my attention.

Really Cool Back Details: Athleta Swimwear

How many of you have heard of Athleta? It’s a catalog for swimwear and clothing for the female sports enthusiast. For some reason I ended up on their mailing list, and receive a catalog every so often. I find this amusing since even my fat, lazy cat is more athletic than I am. Athleta carries a rather typical range of yoga wear, rashguards, UPF-rated tops, swimsuits, cover-ups, and board shorts. But every catalog there’s these little details incorporated into some of the swim pieces that I think are just fantastic. I never really think of swimwear of innovative (and maybe this stuff looks totally run-of-the-mill to other people), but some of the back shapes feel fresh and unique. Totally inspirational – especially since bodycon and bondage-style pieces are so in right now, and I’m thinking DIY…on a tight little LBD with strategically-placed cutouts. One thinks even my cat Muffin might approve??

DIY Lego Brooch Inspired by Dee and Ricky

Thank you Outsapop!

My go-to for DIY inspiration, she posted photos and a DIY for those Marc Jacobs lego accessories (as done by Dee and Ricky) waaaaay back. Since I still had a ton of Legos that I had religiously held onto since childhood, I definitely had enough to make the brooch…but I stopped by my local Lego store and bought the small size “Pick-a-Brick” bucket, choose carefully some basic brick sizes in colors that definitely weren’t available in the 80’s. (Lime green, charcoal grey, hot pink, sky blue, orange.) The effect, when paired with my old tooth-scarred Lego blocks (cuz gripping the darn Lego block between one’s teeth and just pulliing was the only way to separate the darn things back in the day….now the Lego Store sells thingies specifically for prying…one wonders why they didn’t think of that before).

I added some electrical tape between the layers and a pin back behind, so it can be pinned to clothing or even a belt front. I have short hair, so I don’t think I’ll be wearing it in my hair…plus I think 30 is probably to darn old for those things now. *sigh* Perhaps wearing any Lego accessory at my rather ancient age is a little much, but…I love the idea so much, I can’t resist!

Try channeling your inner Lego-loving kid and whip yourself up something fun like this – can’t help but grin at the irony of high fashion meets kiddie toy!
