Heard of JUMA? No??

Maybe it’s just me who’s behind the times.;-)

Recently featured in New York Magazine’s The Cut, designers Alia and Jamil Juma (a brother-and-sister team) specialize in mens and womens contemporary ready-to-wear, active sportswear and other products. The company designs, markets, manufactures and distributes to leading specialty stores, franchise retailers and boutiques. Founded in Toronto, Canada in 2003, the eponymous label can be found in various locals around the world including Canada, United States and Japan.

The label is awash in nudes, blacks, and greys, rendered in soft jersey, in androgynous silhouettes such as loose cardigans, pants, and tops that fit both men and women. According to Jamil, who handles the sales for the label, the unisex kurta drop-crotch harem pants are the biggest seller. “We’ve been showing those pants since 2005 and the first time we showed it to buyers they laughed at us,” he said. “And now it’s all over the place and people are coming to us for them.”I am so loving their Anvil Necklace ($355), Vest Dress ($300), Grey Cardigan ($140), Grey Bolero ($195), Knee-Length Overall Skirt ($150), and their Blue-Print Silk Tunic ($250), which feels like a relief in all that sea of black and gray. (My two favorite colors, though, I have to admit.) (items are listed from top to bottom as they appear in this post; all prices are Canadian dollars BTW – about $1 CAD to $0.94 U.S.)

The prices are a little high for me but I’m in love with the design-sense. I’m not so sure I can get behind their drop-crotch Kurta Pant ($150), though.:-)

How about you guys? Have you heard of them? Purchased any pieces? I’m kind of swooning over the minimalist aspect of it – it’s so urban-cool.

See their full collection and shop online at JUMA.ca.

My Favorite Blogs

Image from iStockPhoto – and no, this photo isn’t of me.

I’m sure, if you’re into fashion (and reading about it on the internet), you’re all already following Sea of Shoes, …love, Maegan, the Glamorai, KarlasCloset, FashionToast, Luxirare, childhood flames, Karen-wheredidugetthat, WhatIWore, GaranceDore, Kingdom of Style, and StyleBubble, no?

Sure, those are the really well-known ones (and personal faves). But I also am in love with some other, smaller blogs as well – maybe you’ve heard of them, and maybe they’re all new to you! I love hearing about what blogs other people are reading – and love even more discovering someone new! So here are a couple to introduce to you – definitely pay them a visit if you get a chance! In no particular order… (all photos are sourced from their respective blogs)

DIY Jen Ell Style

Jen Ell has featured a couple of my tutorials on her site and has a slightly goth-inspired Etsy shop which she stocks with handmade jewelry, accessories, and clothing. She also shares craft tutorials she’s sourced from all over the internet (no granny quilts but really chic how-to’s!)

Fashion Roadkill

Love the blog name – love the random but totally chic fashion finds showcased there. Plus the music will have you lipsynching immediately.

Fashion Cappucino

Hailing from Honolulu (maybe I’m also waxing a little nostalgic for the 4 years I lived there), Shin puts together stylish, enviable outfits that don’t scream “I live in Hawaii!!!” but instead speak more to being fashion-forward rather than island casual.

Favorite Giveaways

Erica’s passion is giveaways and sweepstakes and that is what she showcases on her blog. Though she’s been inactive for a little while I can’t wait to see what she will find next!

Carbon Couture

The DIY’s here are brilliant. Straight off the runways, Cara shows you how to make everything from Miu Miu embellished socks to Vena Cava chain-straps for your shoes, to Luella-inspired floral pompons for your bag.

Vivat Veritas

A young Japanese seamstress showcases her sewn creations and fashion musings. Love her Etsy shop too! Plus, Chie was featured on Glamour.com. Way to go, girl!

If you’re a DIY’er this blog is probably #1 on your reading list. Outi (from Finland) works tirelessly presenting the best and coolest DIY ideas out there – with a focus on recycling, reusing, and repurposing. Oh, and her zipper necklaces are TO DIE FOR!

CosmiCaroline

Gorgeous fashion and style photos. Beautiful girl. Random, intellectual musings such as photos from the aftermath of the Chernobyl blast, or the sounds of electromagentic waves bouncing off the planets. You feel a little bit smarter and a little more “fashion-fed” after visiting Caroline’s blog.

Stars for Streetlights

Relatively new, this blog showcases some cool DIY projects. Stacie made not one but TWO Fendi fabric-rose-covered dresses (her own version). And another holiday dress recently. And a rose-covered scarf. Awesome or what????

BonBonRose

Kristin and Megan showcase sweet, affordable picks from around the internet – they have BonBon deal of the day, which is a personal fave – and right now – tons and tons of gift guides (yes, for you AND the kiddies) which will have your holiday wishlist-making wheels a-spinning…or mouse finger a-clickin.’

the chloe conspiracy

You all know Chloe, right? Right? No? The petite whirlwind of burbling, over-the-top, verbose and utterly silly, ROFL-posts also showcases her shopping faves (fab picks from Anthropologie, Ann Taylor, and Nanette Lepore, for example) and sweet-as-pie outfits. Head on over for a giggle, stay for the endless shopping eye-candy.

aufdemaur by alex teale

Though not really a “fashion-specific” site per se, Alex’s blog showcases her drawings and paintings, which are dreamy, haunting, haute. She also has a personal site here where you can see more of her work. So inspiring!

If I haven’t mentioned your blog – I’m so sorry! There just aren’t enough hours in the day to showcase everyone. I’m still a loyal reader to many I haven’t mentioned…and I will write about you in another post, promise!

Happy Fashion Web-Surfing!

DIY: 2 Men’s Shirts to Cute Babydoll Dress

Get This Tutorial As a PDF

7 DIY Men's Shirt Makeovers ebook

This tutorial has been updated, and is now available as a full step-by-step with photos in my new book 7 DIY Men’s Shirt Makeovers, part of the DIY Men’s Shirt Makeovers System.

To take a break from my usual uniform of dark skinny jeans, black blazer, dark vest, and dark tee…I’ve created this adorable ruffled hem pleat-front ribbon-tie striped babydoll dress from 2 men’s button-down shirts.

(Sorry for the super-dark photos – my sewing room is lit only by a firefly, various glow-in-the-dark toys, and a sputtering birthday candle.)

You Will Need:

2 men’s button-down shirts in coordinating colors (I used size 16 – I think that’s an L, but I recommend using an XL if you are a S/M Misses’…an XXL if you are L/XL Misses.’)  /  thread matching topstitching thread in shirts  /  23″ of 3/4″ wide flat elastic (white)  /  3 m elastic cord (white)…we’ll be gathering fabric so only about 1m will be used eventually, but you need a longer length to do the gathering properly.

Tools:

sewing machine  /  needle for wovens  /  fabric scissors  /  seam ripper  /  iron (optional)  /  1 safety pin

How To:
PREP YOUR PARTS

1. Cut Shirt #1: the sleeves off the shirt and straight across the top just under the second button.
This will serve as the body for your dress.

MAKE THE FRONT INSERT & DRESS BODY

2. To make the front insert, first cut the cuffs off both sleeves and discard. Pin the sleeves together on the long side closest to the sleeve opening placket. Sew together with a 3/8″ seam allowance, open up the piece you just sewed, and lay flat.

3. Turn insert upside-down and pin both sides of it to the underside of the opened shirt front we cut in Step 1), matching bottom hemline. (Underlap about 3/8 – 1/2″ on button placket.)

Sew to shirt front vertically along button plackets.

4. Close top button. On underside, create pleats in front insert, and pin to underside of front.

5. Sew a line straight across the top of the insert, through all layers, catching all the pleats. (This will result in a visible line of stitching through the front of your dress.) Then sew button placket closed above the line you just sewed, going through all layers.

MAKE THE BOTTOM RUFFLE

6. Button up Shirt #2 and lay flat. Mark 7.5″ up from the bottom, and 7.5″ above that. Cut shirt straight across, through both layers, at both marks.

7. Using the bottom of the shirt as a guide, hem the upper strip in a similar fashion (note the center front and center back of the shirt is lower than both sides). I just traced the shape of the bottom hem, added 3/8″, turned under, and stitched a 1/4″ hemline. (I know, technically the top strip needs to be 7 and 7/8″ tall, not 7.5″…but we won’t tell anyone.;-) It’s easier to explain this way.)

8. Cut Shirt #2 according to the photo above: cut the sleeves off, and cut the yoke off the back (we’ll use the yoke later on).

As to the sleeves, mark 7.5″ down from the top of each sleeve, and 7.5″ down below that. Cut sleeves straight across at those marks. (We won’t be using the cuff pieces.)

Pin each sleeve piece together at sides to make one long continuous piece. (In this order: Sleeve cap + bottom piece + sleeve cap + bottom piece. If you’re totally anal about this piece matching the hemmed pieces from Step 7), cut one of the bottom pieces in half widthwise – and pin each half to the outside edges of this joined piece. I.e., bottom piece half + sleeve cap + bottom piece + sleeve cap + bottom piece half.)

Sew sleeve pieces together. Hem the edge that has the rounded part of the sleeve caps in a similar fashion to the piece you hemmed in Step 7), cutting off the extra to create a similar hemline.

9. Connect all 3 ruffle pieces together by sewing them at their sides with a 3/8″ seam allowance. (Connect all so you’ve made a continuous piece.)

10. Make a double knot in the end of your elastic cord. Place it on the wrong side, along the top of the ruffle piece you just sewed (about 3/8″ from the edge). Using a loose zigzag stitch on your sewing machine, zigzag over the elastic cord all the way around the ruffle piece. Do not stitch through the cord – it must remain free and moveable under your stitches. Backstitch a couple times at the beginning and end of your stitching to strengthen it.

11. Pull on the un-knotted end of the cord, gathering the fabric underneath it. Gather the ruffle piece until it is basically the same circumference as the bottom of your dress.

12. Pin the gathered ruffle to the bottom of the dress, right sides together. The bottom of the dress is already a curvy hem – pin the straight side of your ruffle around these curves. This will create a beautiful wavy hem when finished. Double-knot the elastic cording again once you have verified the pinned length of the ruffle – then cut off the extra cord.

13. Stitch ruffle to bottom of dress, stitching below the elastic cording.

GATHER THE DRESS TOP

14. Fold under top of dress about 1″+. Stitch straight across bottom of folded edge to create a casing.

15. Attach safety pin to one end of your flat elastic. Thread through the casing and out the other side.

16. Match end of elastic to edge of dress; stitch down the edge to secure.

17. Hold the elastic firmly and gather the front fabric – the finished width of your dress front needs to be 11.5″.

18. Once at the correct width, stitch down the other end of the elastic, and trim so nothing is visible from the front.

19. Repeat for the back of the dress – the finished length for the back of the dress needs to be 10.5.”

MAKE THE SHOULDER-STRAPS

20. Cut back yoke off Shirt #1 as well as from Shirt #2…which we did in Step 8). (The yoke is usually double-sided; if yours isn’t, you have to scavenge fabric from somewhere else on your shirt. I think the ties look best when the stripe pattern is going up and down the length of the tie, not across, so I chose an area where I can get a piece of fabric 17.5″ long with the stripes going up and down.)

21. Sketch out the following shape onto both pieces: a tall trapezoid, with the top side 1.25″ wide, the bottom 2.5″ wide, and the entire piece 17.5″ tall. Cut shape out, separate the front and the back, and remove any labels with a seam ripper.

22. Fold each piece over, right sides together, and sew along longest edge, pivot, and along shortest edge. Turn piece right side out, and topstitch along unstitched edge to flatten it. (You can also iron it at this point to flatten it out further.)

23. Pin each piece under the top of the dress, at both front and back, about 1/2″ down from top hem, on either side. I positioned the pieces matching the dress body at the front, and the pieces matching the ruffle at the back.

24. Stitch across strap through all layers using a zigzag stitch for strength.

25. Tie bows tightly to prevent slippage.

You’re done!

You now have a super-cute dress perfect for lounging about, a sweet babydoll nightie appropriate for the boudoir – or even, under a blazer and over jeans or leggings, a chic piece to add into any day ensemble. Or you can wear it out as is during warmer months – rocking it with some lace-up sandals, a little metallic clutch, and a rhinestone clip in your hair.

(Daiso 100yen shop multi-ring necklace, vintage blazer, handmade dress, DKNY jeans, Payless Victorian button booties)

Notes:

When I created the front of the dress, I sewed 2 sleeves together – resulting in a wide pleat at the front which can, in profile, make the wearer look preggers.:-P If you prefer a less generous A-line, create use a single sleeve instead for the front insert. This dress, because of the generous front pleat, would also be great maternity wear! (It’s kind of cute-sexy, so I think it would work great!)

I would recommend if you wanted fuller bows – to either use fabric from other parts of the shirt and double the width of the cut parts…or cut the pieces as I wrote above and instead of folding them in half, just fold under the raw edges about 1/4″ and topstitch to keep in place (eliminating Step 22)- thus leaving you with single-layer fabric bows instead of double layer.

The finished dress may be somewhat short for some people -I’ve thus recommended an XL men’s shirt to hopefully deal with the length problem. Making the ruffle 8″ or 8.5″ high before you cut it out may also help with this if you’re concerned about the length – I am 5’6″.

I’d also recommend ironing your shirts first! My blue-striped shirt was a little rumply – which is reflected in the finished piece. The dress is now extremely difficult to iron due to all the ruffles – so make sure your shirts are free of wrinkles first!

Happy DIY’ing!

Saks Catalog: Beach Reading

Akris printed dress, $1990. A rarely-seen print from Akris. I love how it looks like an abstract image of some technology-related graphic.

So the Saks catalog arrived the other day (I had had a gift card to Saks a little while ago and so, when I used, it, I ended up on one of their mailing lists…which is fine with me cuz I love browsing through catalogs! It gives me ideas to make myself!) – and I wanted to share with you a couple images that have me all a-drool.

MAXMARA ruffle-front blouse, $350. These aren’t ruffles so much as origami-style pleats. I love what a fresh take this is on the standard crisp white blouse! Perhaps I’ll DIY a thrift-store find…or maybe cough up the $350 if I get desperate.;-) MAXMARA Printed pencil skirt, $475. The print is abstract and chic – and totally do-able with your own fabric paints and a brush!

Marc Jacobs Cheetah-print Trench Coat, $498, and Pointelle Cotton Top with bows, $138. Leopard is everywhere, no kidding! I love that this top uses bows over buttons (snaps) as closure detail – so sweet! (And so DIY-able!:-)

Jimmy Choo Saks Exclusive Leather Bag with Snake Metal Detail, $1295. Kind of sinister yet high-brow at the same time.

You can view (and shop, if you are so inclined!) the entire catalog online here. Whether you shop for Spring items or pieces to update your winter wardrobe (or gourmet food gifts – a new development at Saks! With mini truffle cheeseburgers, caviar, artisan chocolates, and lobster tails available), enter code HOLIDAY9 to get free shipping, and get a free gift box with red ribbon at checkout.

Insight Beanpole Shredded Jeans Outfit

(vintage thrifted jacket, Roxy tee (thrifted), Sideways Gold Cross Necklace, double waistcoat from Japan, Insight Beanpole Shredded Jeans, Sam Edelman Zoe wedge heels, Claire’s armwarmers)

I’m having a problem with Blogger not displaying all of the comments in my past posts.

I usually don’t reply to comments immediately since I’m short on time on a daily basis – I’ll reply to them in bulk when I have some spare time, usually about once a week (or every 2 weeks…yup I got me a goshdarngood system I tellsya!) – and now as I’m going back through my blog I’m seeing TONS of comments missing. (I haven’t deleted them, honest I haven’t! *cries* *random blubbering*)

So if you’ve left a comment lately, and I haven’t replied or you don’t see your comment on the blog – well, I hope Blogger’s working on it, cuz I ain’t done a thing! I do try and visit everyone’s blog who leaves me a comment (if you’ve left your blog addy in the comment) – so me not stopping by and thanking you for your input is either I just haven’t gotten to your comment yet…or it has mysteriously disappeared. (This has only been happening today [Friday], so the problem may be fixed by the time this posts.)

Anyway.

This military vest I got in Japan [at LaForet Harajuku] is so cool because it’s double-layered
…and you can remove the outer layer at the 3 vertical buttons.

I won these fabulous shredded jeans in an Insight x Ladylike Fatlace giveaway last month!!

I was super-stoked. Actually, I won a pair of colored beanpole jeans, and the rep emailed me letting me know they were out of stock, would I like the shredded ones? I said HELL YES! and we had a deal.

‘Cept…she asked my size and I stupidly said 26. I looked all over the site for a size chart and couldn’t find it. I’m a 26 in 7 For All Mankind’s and a 27 in Forever21 stretch skinnies. I figured I should go smaller cuz skinny jeans stretch out as you wear them.

‘Cept I couldn’t get the 26’s over my butt. My thighs were complaining of abuse since they had no room to breathe in the 26’s. I couldn’t even sit down. So I emailed the rep back saying thanks but they didn’t fit oh well – I think I’ll do a giveaway on my blog instead and she emailed me saying she’d replace them for free!!! It doesn’t get any better than that!

BUT WAIT! She even sent along the Halliwell top in the new package!!! I was so flattered I wrote her a gushing (maybe kind of scary??) email. How incredibly thoughtful of her!!

So above is my outfit with the jeans that I put together on Friday. I’m wearing vests layered under blazers lately – for that extra texture/color/sparkle…plus it’s been freakin’ cold lately!

I got this sideways cross on Etsy (for $40!) back in August after falling in love with the Roseark version on Taylor Jacobson from The Rachel Zoe Project. [It’s originally from TheresaMink though right now she’s on vacay so it’s being shipped by someone else.] The funny thing is, Rumi (from FashionToast) has worn the same one lately.
It’s just all OVER the place! I love how it’s delicately irreverent – yet it still proclaims some sort of faith. Or maybe I’m just reading too much into it?? haha

Something I never noticed about these Sam Edelman’s: the cool printed bottom. Now caked with mud from my garden. (Not that I was doing gardening in them LOL.) Ah well – I guess everyone’s going nuts over the Acne Atacoma wedges now, right?

In the background, Muffin and Pudding have made their escape from house arrest and are stirring up some major trouble, knowing those two.

Have a great weekend gals! DIY tutes coming up once I get thru the next mess of birthday parties and Santa Claus helicopter-visits! (Don’t ask.)

P.S. And I really wasn;t going for that totally Taylor look with my hair…I’ve just changed shampoos, and haven’t figured out how to deal with the aftermath of washing it just yet.;-)

Forever21 Twist Tres Paris Collection: Chic or Cheap?

What do we all think? Is it screaming Parisian chic! to you? (Of course, I’m no authority, having never been to the lovely city of light, but have any of you been? Is this Paris style or just a cheap, Forever 21 version of it?)

Now despite it being un-fashionable (and maybe a tad immoral?) to love Forever 21 design I have to say they always come up with things I’m gaga about. I’m loving the printed, piped trenchcoat, lacy umbrella, and black-and-white oxford heels (none of which are available online yet – here’s hoping!), but the whole collection feels a little burlesque to me. Maybe it’s the see-thru striped over-the-knee socks, or just the hemlines I’m having a problem with. (Of course, my image of Parisian chic usually involves skirts slightly longer, and yes, over-the-knee hose in some rare cases…but said hose must be opaque. I stand by this!) I feel almost like there’s too much skin showing for it to be “chic.”

What are your thoughts? Are you buying it?

Available now at Forever21 stores and online

And I truly am digging the lace umbrella, though the beautiful flowered umbrella below feels more “Paris” to me.
Roses Umbrella, $19.95 (sale), Signals.com

I can just myself in a little beret, with this slung over my arm and my other arm around a brown crackly paper bag, baguette sticking out the top…or in my case, it would be beret fallen off my head into a puddle, squirming toddler under the other arm, toddler-fodder gnawed bread in a crushed heap at the bottom of my bag. But at least my umbrella would be an imaginary whiff of Paris!;-)

Christian Louboutin Barbie Available at Net-a-Porter

Bwahahaha! Now I’ve seen everything! If you want your very own Barbie doll with Christian Louboutin-designed accessories, she’s available for $150 from Net-a-Porter. She even comes with those strappy super-spiked heels I did a DIY of last week!

Is it wrong that I kind of want this Barbie? 😉 (Just to play with a couple times, not to keep LOL.) This is definitely not a toy for little ones, though (I am amused by the fact they don’t have an “Ages x and up” disclaimer on Net-a-Porter.) I love all the little accessories…Mattel never bothered to think that realistically in designing Barbie’s shoes n stuff. Not liking the catsuit – would be much better in a long trench, oversize sunnies, and a Marc Jacobs dress. Or Rodarte sweater!! Now that would be a Barbie I buy.

Insight Halliwell Top Outfit

(Claire’s velvet-and-chain necklace, Insight Halliwell Top, Icing by Claire’s rhinestone ring, Old Navy grosgrain rose-detail belt, Forever21 ombre-dye chiffon skirt, Delias quilted bag, Newport-News flower kitten-heel slides)

I just wanted to put this Insight top into an outfit before I say goodbye to it – since I’m giving it away here. It’s one size too big for me…*cries*….and I would have to alter it drastically to fix the fit issues…so that’s why it’s up on my blog for a giveaway. (But it’s not because I’m not appreciative of receiving it from the Insight showroom!) It’s cute, versatile, and a little edgy all at the same time.
Shoes are Newport-News knockoffs of I think some Miu Miu design? From 2002 or so…I didn’t even know they were knockoffs – they just appealed to me. I usually dislike overtly Asian-inspired clothing/accessories…I liked that these were feminine and could pair into a lot of different outfits.
I loved this Forever21 skirt the instant I saw it – such a chic take on ombre – and it’s chiffon! (Albeit poly-.) Can you tell I’ve got Spring on the brain?? I’m so over these gray days here in Portland!

Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend! Now it’s back to the Daily Grind…;-)
