Erika from SnobStyle TV shared a video on how to tie-dye something for E! News. I just love it when mainstream news and media brings attention to DIY!
Though the video is from awhile ago, tie-dye is still totally on-trend for this Spring!
And if you’re looking for more how-tos, Parents Magazine has a couple more tie-dye patterns (though you have to scroll through the slideshow (which takes forever, the patterns are on page 5 and onwards).
White cotton t-shirts may look a little Grateful Dead, but try it out with fitted shirts, a blousy tunic, or even a maxidress for the 2011 re-interpretation of this. Tie-dye never goes away, baby!;-)
Easter for us just means a lot of family fun: colorful baskets brimming with toys and chocolate bunnies and jellybeans; cinnamon rolls for breakfast; a midnight snack and a handwritten note left out for the Easter Bunny; an Easter egg hunt in the garden [in the Portland rain]; playing with a new set of dominoes, learning Go Fish, watching Wow Wow Wubbzy as he paints Easter eggs; eating an evening meal filled with fresh Spring foods.
Oh, and if you’re in a crafty mood – you could also make my DIY $4 Easter Wreath from all those leftover eggs from the hunt!

I felt shocked and devastated after the horrible events of March 11 in Japan…and even more so when I saw the reactions of numerous people (some anonymous, some not) on the Internet. I felt compelled to apologize to the Japanese people because of this.

Actually, they’re already underway at the Portland Expo Center: demonstrations on how to green up your lifestyle, organic and fair-trade foods and cooking info, documentary film screenings, beauty demonstrations, activities for the kiddies, and an eco-friendly fashion show each night. I’m heading to that tonight and I’m super-excited to see Lizzie Parker, Saffrona, Pacadudz, and Rock On Jewelry Design – which I’ll be posting photos of later!

I spotted two pairs of socks I sent in this photo: the hot-pink stripe and the light pink socks!
As you all probably know, besides donating money for tsunami relief efforts in Japan, I also sent 38 pairs of socks for men, women, and children, along with some handwritten letters and toiletry items, to a newly-formed organization that aims to distribute these items to the displaced victims housed in temporary shelters in the northern parts of Japan.
This morning,Socks for Japan shared their first experience making a delivery to a couple shelters located in Ibaraki, who had cited an urgent need for socks and specially requested them. The group also shared the photos they took of the destroyed towns and homes, damaged personal items, and the isolated survivors in the various shelters they visited.
From their account of the day:
Three ladies sat together on a blanket after receiving their socks, all three engrossed in reading the letters. They looked so happy and kept turning to each other to share what their letters said. They noticed us noticing them, and the eldest among them held her letter up and told us, “This is wonderful.”
Hand-writing 14 copies of this long letter took an awful long time…
But for the look on this woman’s face I would write 10,000 more.
It’s so amazing to be involved with a charity that actually does what it sets out to do, wholly and caringly – and provides an actual account of their work so there can be no misunderstandings about it. Perhaps I shall never learn the names of these people…but I am so glad to have brightened their day in even the smallest way.
The write-up is incredibly moving, and hopefully puts to rest any criticisms that socks are neither needed nor wanted.
There are a number of pieces that have been on my mind for awhile but I’ve been unable to devote the DIY time since this project for my class is threatening to eat me alive. These items, however, are burned into my brain…and are on deck for some upcoming tutorials…
