Fashion is Booming

Style cares not about the economy, so we continue on, falling in love with a fabulous pairs of shoes, lbd, and the perfect little cardie. New boutiques, designers, ideas, and innovative, avant garde concepts continue to emerge, and we can’t help but start a new love story with our latest DIY project, amazing vintage find, department store score, or simply a fabulous floral umbrella. And so, as the title suggests, fashion is booming, creativity is soaring, and we can take a big exhale and shove our worries aside – it’s time to allow ourselves to get excited about wearing some new or all-time favorite spring-weather garments and accessories.

Yes, this has taken me a month to post. An entire month!! Eeek. I am getting behind and backed up as of late; so sorry to everyone.
This lovely award I received from the
The Fashion Planner. A frequent commenter here on
Chic Steals, this gal runs a lovely and inspirational blog chock-full of great styling tips, what-to-wear solutions, and crafty how-tos (that DIY flower clip tutorial is calling my name!) She’s also written an an interative style guide e-book called
The Fashion Planner’s Guide, available for download on Lulu.com!
So, the requirements of the award are:

Funny enough, alot of my “Make-me-happy” things are the same as The Fashion Planner’s!! (Are they the same as yours?)
My Happy 10 (in no particular order):
1. Catching up with friends in email/phone/person
2. Getting nice things (not bills!! >:-( ) in the mail
3. Making low-cal, healthy sweet treats
4. Making clothes, jewelry, and accessories
5. Drawing
6. Playing with my son (and teaching him something new, hopefully:-)
7. Sweet comments on my blog
8. Watching a movie with a big ol’ bucket of movie theater popcorn
9. Going for a jog or walk
10. Appreciating nature
The ones I did today:
4) I worked on making a shirt. And some polyclay cookies.
6) My son and I drew pictures together and I taught him to draw a worm, a T. Rex, and a helicopter.

10) I planted some stuff in my garden.

I rarely, if ever, cover editorials – and usually not those in men’s magazines…but these advance photos from VMAN (hitting the newsstands on April 20) caught my eye. Blending a fashion-forward photoshoot with 3D animated characters? Me liking this advertising gimmick!

I am a bit confused as to what, if anything, the Shrek characters have to do with the editorial…but who cares. It’s amusing.

from A Good Look, the blog by the Goodwill of NY and NJ: “Chic Steals’ Carly purchased 48 lbs of clothes at her local Goodwill Outlet Store. That’s right – 48 lbs. of fashion as awesome as that white lace number. Nice haul, Carly!”
from CraftyCrafty.tv: “I’m always impressed by DIY-ers who choose less obvious fabrics to make up their patterns (remember the shower curtain dress?) so I was instantly drawn to this delightful dress that Chic Steals made up from a Vogue pattern using Ikea’s Patricia fabric. Ikea’s a good place to find bold, clean and eyecatching fabrics, which work just fine in dressmaking, even when they’re intended for upholstery.

Seriously, what runs through your mind looking at the above ad?
I mean, who is this appealing to?
What does she look like she’s doing? And where is she going??!
Really, Mr. Paul Marciano!!
I feel that in the past couple years Guess ads are getting more and more…um…skankalicious. The brand has always been about sexuality – both subtle and overt…but something like this I feel kind of crosses the line, like those American Apparel ads. (warning: semi-NSFW images if you click)
Is this post-feminism at play or just some guy’s misogyny? (Or being totally out-of-touch with his consumers?)
What kind of woman would buy this?
