Miu Miu Spring 2011 RTW, photo: Monica Feudi / GoRunway.com vs. Kaena Point Indigo Blue Dress, $49, Lulu.com
I loved the scalloping detail in Miu MIu’s Spring RTW collection this year. Apparently someone else did too.;-) Thanks to Lulus.com, we can all now own the scalloped-edge dress in a deep indigo, similar to what we saw at Miu Miu. (the scallop detail is covered cord in the Lulus version, whereas the Miu Miu looks like vinyl)
As a side note, I find the name of the dress amusing as Kaena Point is just beyond Hub and my favorite place in the whole wide world: where our secret beach lies at the tip of Yokohama bay on Oahu.

Styling the Cropped Zip Jacket [“Rider’s Jacket”] / Styling the Long Skirt
My mother-in-law is a subscriber to Japan Vogue, and every time I visit I always attack the back issues she’s kept with vigor. Instead of what I’m used to from American Vogue (model Raquel Zimmermann gracing almost every editorial spread in every issue since last Spring – copious featuring of fashion from Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Diane von Furstenburg, Valentino, with a sprinkling of Maison Martin Margiela – a reliance on jewelry from Giles & Brother, LowLuv by Erin Wasson, and Fallon/Fenton – numerous editorials featuring models jumping or poised in air), its Japanese counterpart features many designers I’m only passingly familiar with, editorials with unusual styling and poses, a mashup of brands, and interesting articles devoted to beauty products, designer perfumes, local restaurants, and local event coverage. It’s a breath of fresh air (albeit still in the luxury category featuring nothing I can really afford), and I love immersing myself in its world.

I also love how Japan Vogue tries to address its readership and features outfits and styling that are possible for everyday women. It’s the fantasy translated to reality, and with this in mind one can easily swap out items from one’s wardrobe or lower-priced pieces to stand in for the designer options.

Here is a feature I was inspired by – it shows styling options that are more youthful (“Young”) vs. styling in a more mature manner (“Adult”), utilizing the same on-trend core piece and building the outfit around it.

Yup, my family and I leave for Tokyo today – and we’ll be there an entire month. However, I’ll be taking my laptop with me this time, so I’ll still be blogging from the other side of the world. I’m looking forward to a month of tons of walking and exercise, tackling my personal webpage and portfolio, tasting some superb food, hanging out with my relatives, and indulging in some fabulous, fabulous shopping!

I’ve been a huge fan of the blog Vivat Veritas for a long time. Based in Tokyo, blogger Chie is not only incredibly stylish (and nice!), but is also a full-time designer. She runs an Etsy shop filled with her affordable and beautiful dresses – that she designs and makes by hand. On her blog she posts inspiration and outfit photos, behind-the-scenes photos for her lookbook shoots, and hosts sewing giveaways. Add to all of that she’s a brand-new mom, so she’s super-duper busy. And she recently contacted me requesting an interview!
I babble about how my interests of Animation and Fashion Design relate (do they at all?), talk parenting and career…and of course, DIY!
