The cold weather is beginning to abate, and Spring is soon on its heels with a burst of fresh, bright, citrusy colors. Spring is just around the corner – and I can’t wait to update my wardrobe with all the fun trends on they way. Get a head start with some DIY ideas for these major Spring 2013 trends:
#7: Delicate White Lace
Pristine, white, and sweet: cutwork and lace evoked innocence at Emilio Pucci and Giambattista Valli (above). Try lacy lingerie peeking out of a boxy top, or fully embrace the trend with a pretty lace dress.

#6: Peekaboo Pieces
Spring is one of the best times to show a little skin, and BCBG Max Azria (above) and Cushnie et Ochs thought the same. Update your wardrobe with some strategically-placed cutouts to let the sun in.

#5: Black Mesh

#4: Leather

#3: Black and White Contrast
With the 60’s-influence seen in Collection after Collection, big blocks of black and white dominated. Go totally mod with these neutrals like at Chanel and Proenza Schouler.

There is this dress that I can’t wait for ModCloth to get back in stock…that I see in my dreams…
It’s a Wonderful Life Dress by Bernie Dexter, $155.99
Bernie Dexter has the most amazing photo-print dresses on ModCloth, but all around the same price point. Somewhat of an investment.
….Alternatively, one could bypass the wait (and the cost) by ordering something like this fabric from Spoonflower (or getting your own favorite snowy cottage scene printed with them!). I’d advise getting your print from them in cotton sateen, maybe about 2 yards (depending on your waist size and the way the pattern lies on the fabric). This is also another lovely alternative photo print on Spoonflower.
Then just choose a coordinating fabric for the top of your dress from the fabric store, do a rub-off of a dress you own (or try using a retro-style pattern, like this one from BurdaStyle)…and there’s a perfectly beautiful photo-print retro dress…for a whole lot less.;-)

A warm coat is a
must in the Northern climate I live in (Portland, OR), and it’s tough to find a good coat that goes with a number of different outfits (and that isn’t a huge amount of money). Of course, something that one wears daily from September-June of the year
should be an investment piece, but
that doesn’t mean it has to be a significant chunk of change. If you can time the purchase of such a piece to a seasonal sale, or buy from a retailer that offers great brands at affordable prices, then half the work is already done for you.
I love checking out the
coat selection at Macy’s because as a national retailer they carry select brands such as Steve Madden and Nine West, that are both trend-driven but easy on the wallet. Plus, they offer sales all the time! (And they’re offering one
right now, in fact!!)
Many of their brands (including designers such as Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Vince Camuto, and DKNY) also offer styles that are exclusive to Macy’s – meaning you won’t be wearing the same topper as 3 other random people at the holiday party.
I fell in love with this two-toned Nine West coat, that I’ve been wearing nonstop since it arrived. The shape is beautiful and the colorblocking instantly dresses up even the most beat-up pair of jeans beneath. It’s very high-quality for the price, and the stiff outer wool is withstanding the abuse I throw at it without losing its shape or collapsing. It’s now my go-to work cover-up, that can go from the studio to a client meeting seamlessly.
For an edgier feel (or dressed-down casual wear), a puffer vest is a great piece. This Style&Co vest is supremely affordable at just under $41, featuring a removable hood and great hardware details. It’s perfect as a layer for when it’s not too chilly out, and thrown over or under another coat it’s amazingly toasty.
Ordering from Macy’s online is super-simple (orders over $99 ship free!), and my package even came with a slip to rate their packing job (!). Macys.com even has this cool feature where you can create a poll of items you like, and share it on Facebook with your friends to get their input. Social sharing at its most fun!
Now that my personal coat shopping for this season is complete…I can now focus on the next hurdle: Christmas gifts!! Eeek!

Grey City The Rebel Shoe with Cross in Purple Haze, $200
I’m loving the shoe line Grey City and their alluringly gothic take on the standard black wedge – it makes me want to drape myself in head-to-toe black, shredded tees, and DIY Rick Owens accoutrements. Maybe it’s my inner Daria…or maybe what Daria would have been in 2012.
