What I wore last Saturday to that networking event I was so psyched about. (one of these days I’ll actually post an outfit on the day I wore it. Won’t that be something?!!)
The daffodils I planted last fall are about to bloom. They are supposed to be white, with a pink ruffled center. [They aren’t, as I found out once they did actually bloom. The centers are orangey-salmon, and the outer petals are cream. Pretty, but. Grrr.]
Hub says my runner’s watch is supremely unfashionable. Just the excuse I need to go shopping for a new one, he he!
This Love Stitch top is so unusual. It’s a sleeveless tunic top with a crochet faux outer layer at the neckline and upper back, and the front can be tied with a thin tie. It has flaps at the bust with button-detailing, and ruched sides anchored by more buttons.
It’s totally wrinkled from a long day of sitting and walking around…but it definitely looked nicer earlier in the day.:-)
Normally I don’t go for the more boho vibe most of Love Stitch’s stuff has, but I thought the detailing was superb (which made its $29 pricetag on Ideeli a real steal! Making all those flaps, sewing all those buttons…blech. Not something I want to invest my time in, so thus, Totally Worth The Money – TWTM for short haha!) I got out of the event what I wanted to: met some cool people, got more of a grip on the local industry scene here, got some decent advice etc. No full-time job leads just yet – pretty much everyone said “just show up at the companies you want to work at and pitch them!” Just gotta work up the cojones (and portfolio of course!) to do that. I got some MAJOR drawing ahead of me, I suppose.

Hi! Wow, New York! I’m no expert, but a couple spots that I enjoyed (and mentioned on my blog) were Crumbs Bakery, metalliferous, M & J Trimmings, and shopping at little stores like STEPS Boutique and Strawberry. I would have loved to peek in more high-end boutiques like Albertine, What Goes Around Comes Around, Patricia Field, Opening Ceremony, Topshop, Eryn Birnie, and hang out in F.A.O. Schwartz and Dylan’s Candy Bar. Plus a stroll through Central Park always says “New York” to me! (As well as a bag or hot nuts from one of the street vendors late at night:-) And watching the ice skaters at Rockefeller Center (probably gone in March, tho…) Yeah, okay..not an expert…:-)You may want to scroll through my blog where I ask my readers for suggestions – the had some pretty good ones.
Anyone else have some suggestions for her?

Lil’ Tot loooves the Nick Jr. cartoon Max & Ruby. Like loves. He begs me to watch it every day. It’s a sweet little cartoon about Max and his big sister Ruby and her difficulties with keeping him out of trouble. Repeated viewings are also definitely helping with Lil Tot’s English vocabulary.

He especially loves the episode where Ruby loses a tooth in one of Grandma’s Triple-Nut Coconut Crunch Muffins. So, since he has come down with a cold and has to stay indoors, I decided to make similar muffins with him as a special treat.
I’ve adapted this recipe from the “Coconut Cupcakes” recipe in Naturally Thin: Unleash Your SkinnyGirl and Free Yourself from a Lifetime of Dieting
by Bethenny Frankel. I really love her healthy recipes and solid advice within – it truly is a whole new way to address food and eating issues. But the recipes are to-die-for! I didn’t have vegan shortening or oat flour or raw sugar, as the recipe calls for, so I made some substitutes and added some things. They do not “puff up” like muffins that use butter and eggs…they are more cakelike and crumby in consistency.
Carly’s Coconut-Banana Crunch Muffins
makes 12 muffins
*3/4 cup sugar
*1 1/4 c whole-wheat flour
*1 1/2 tsp baking powder
*1/2 tsp salt
*1/3 cup shortening (like Crisco)
*1/2 cup vanilla soymilk**
*3/4 tsp coconut extract
*1 banana, diced
*2 T brown sugar
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line muffin tins with paper or foil liners.
2. Combine the first 4 ingredients in a bowl, and mix them until well-blended. Add the shortening and cream together with the dry ingredients. Mix the soymilk and coconut extract in a separate bowl, then add to the first mixture, mixing until batter is just moistened.
3. Stir in banana pieces.
4. Scoop the batter into the liners (you can use an ice cream scoop; I didn’t since the batter is quite sticky). Sprinkle on the brown sugar over the tops of the muffins before placing in the oven, which will create a delicious “crunchy” topping.
5. Bake for 20 minutes; rotating the pan after 10 minutes. Remove from oven and then remove the muffins from the pan to cool. They are delicious warm and are more cakelike when cooled.
**(If you do not have vanilla soymilk, use 1/2 cup of soymilk + 3/4 tsp vanilla.)

Hmmm….that’s a toughie. I’ve been blessed to have a handful of wonderful, dear friends scattered the world over – London, L.A., Tokyo, Brussels, Honolulu, New York, D.C…but I have not lived in the same town as any of them for a couple years now. I also have 2 friends whom I count my closest (and oldest, all the way going back to high school) – we’ve shared so many highs and lows, 15 years…and it’s been a lot. One girl and one guy, the best of both worlds. I don’t know where I would be without either of them.:-)
