H & M in New York

I also managed to stop by H & M while in New York City.  We don’t have one in Portland (but one is apparently coming this summer!  Yay! …Unless you’re one of those people who are against the increasing corporatization and mass-marketed clothing available in a town known for indie fashion…in that case…Nay!)

But I still found many lovely pieces at New York’s H&M!  Check it out below:

I would have bought this beautiful butterfly skirt had they had any more of it in my size.

Love this! Crisp white shirt – detailed like a chef’s uniform.

Gingham done incredibly chic.

Hello Kitty makes everything better!

A haunting Laura Laine illustration on a tanktop.

Tiny pearls create a pretty design on a top.

I soooo regret not getting this skirt. If someone’s near an H&M and would like to get it for me in a size M (6) & send it to me, I’ll pay you for it!

GORGEOUS skirt. I can’t believe the work went into this…and that it’s at H&M for an affordable price.

I like the way the cutwork trim is used around the neck and sleeves.

Ooh- this is just brimming with ideas to DIY!

Luca Luca Fall/Winter 2010 Collection & Interview with Raul Melgoza

From Sunday, February 14 – Luca Luca showcased their Fall/Winter 2010 Collection.

My seating assignment, the Run of Show, and my Press Pass to the Tents.

From the press release: “Melgoza’s design aesthetic is rooted in classicism, yet his vision incorporates the ever-changing role of women in society.  His design philosophy is to transcend seasons and trends to accomplish clothing that can be worn for a lifetime.  The brand has expanded the distributon of its collection from freestanding boutiques in major US cities to international markets such as Europe, Russia, and the Middle East.”

The makeup look for the show.

A shot of the makeup table.

A favorite of celebrities and socialites alike, Luca Luca was founded in 1992 by Luca Orlandi.  (Tinsley Mortimer -looking rail-thin – was in attendance, as well as former American Idol finalist Constantine Maroulis, and a member of the Real Housewives of NYC who I loathe so intensely I refuse to type her name and give her any more press.)

Plus this lady whose name totally escapes me right now…can anyone help me out?

“Melgoza’s new collection is inspired by the sculpture and contour of architecture and embodies the juxtaposition of polar opposites.  With the collection, he harmonoiusly combines opposing elements – masculine and feminine, structure and fluidity, soft and corase, dense and sheer, matte and shiny.”

With jewelry by Dannijo (interview coming up soon!, it was destined to be quite a show of sophisticated luxe.  And it truly did not disappoint…see below:

Watch the video of the show here:

I also had the wonderful opportunity to interview Creative Director Raul Melgoza, appointed in 2008 by founder Luca Orlandi.  Originally from Italy but raised in L.A., Melgoza is a Parsons graduate, and joined the company in 2005.  He cites Tim Gunn as a mentor, says he is in love with the seasons (that’s why he loves New York); and was inspired by beautiful buildings, sculpture, and the architecture of Frank Gehry in the creation of this collection.  Utilizing clean lines that focus the eye on the silhouette, Melgoza combined fabrics in a palette of steel blue, midnight, dusty rose, and metalic-infused fabrics of antique silver, bronze, and charcoal.silver, liquid gold with silver undertones to create chic, wearable pieces.

Listen to the interview below:

Transcription of the interview:
Carly J. Cais: Did you always know you wanted to be a designer?
Raul Melgoza: Actually, you know, I did not…it’s funny because  I was always inspired and drawn to things that were beautiful, but it wasn’t necessarily just clothing it was music, it was homes, travel – I had an innate sensibility for what was amazing; what was artistic…so having said that I never grew up drawing; nobody in my family sewed.  So I actually got an undergraduate degree in finance and it was during those years that having a marketing course really opened my eyes to the possibility of merging commerce and art, so that was when i decided I’m attending parsons, so I moved from L.A. and Parsons was really my first experience with any kind of schooling in the arts.

CJC: How old were you at the time?
RM: I was twenty-five.  I had done my undergrad, I had actually worked a couple years in the Treasury Department, totally a corporate career.  It has helped me a lot as a Creative Director to understand that it has to be more than just a 10-minute show that people watch, it has to have a sell-through if I want to have a job.

CJC: Have you adjusted your strategies at all given the recent economic difficulties?
RM: We’re working obviously on being a little more sensitive, if your going to bead something then perhaps not get so crazy with very elaborate construction because at the end of the day it’s going to be a ten-thousand, fifteen-thousand-dollar piece, and yes it’s beautiful, but we also want to have a few more so that people see it.  So if you’re creating things that are unattainable, you’re almost defeating your objective: which is to be out there and be part of the wardrobe of as many people as you can.

CJC: Makes sense.  But in lieu of that, are there any specific embellishments or deisgn elements or fabrics that you really loved working with and want to talk about?
RM: Oh yeah, in this collection you’ll see some amazing, amazing fabrics.  There’s a lot of wools and tweeds that have a lacquered finish to give it a modern, it doesn’t look like an older woman…everything has a bit of a gloss, there’s lacquered wools, there’s modern cuts on fur, and an overall shorter, flirtier silhouette.

CJC: So what do you want Luca Luca to embody or encompass in one phrase?
RM: I think Luca Luca shoold stand for timeless, modern clothes.

An incredibly well-spoken and intelligent man – and I loved the shiny sheaths – ESPECIALLY the slate blue -part-pleated dress, which is calling my name.:-)

What do all of you think of the collection?

Gladiator sandals…in or out for 2010 summer season? I got an e-mail from Payless saying they are “back” for the coming summer, but not come across anything else about them. Are they in or out?

Hmmm…that’s a toughie. I’ve seen a couple for sale already thru Victoria’s Secret and Alloy…but it seems there are far less than the huge number of styles that there were last year. Everything seems to be a bit less angry, black, and studded, IMHO. On the runways for S/S there were few, if any, gladiators – designers mostly favored suede, canvas, or strappy sandals in different shapes, and in nudes or light metallics (Chloe, Calvin Klein), as well as clear vinyl (with acrylic heels a la Prada). Then of course you still have Givenchy, Giuseppe Zanotti, and Roberto Cavalli who are keeping the black studded sandal alive and well.:-) There were also a lot of natural-colored skins (snake, lizard), and T-strap shapes…few sandals that extended up above the ankle. See Coutorture’s post on the newest items hitting the shelves here (http://www.coutorture.com/Summer-Sandals-Hit-Shelves-2663323) for some comparison! My vote?

Gladiators = OUT (for the most part) for Summer 2010. You can still get away with wearing yours from last year though…now that they’re not a HUGE trend like they were in ’09, you’ll look more like you’re defining your own style and sticking to something you like rather than hopping on the trend bandwagon.

Hope that helps! Thanks for your question:-)

Get the Look For Less: The Oscars

Well, I might as well do an Oscars-themed post as the Oscars are now three days ago.  Better late than never:-)

The girls from I Heart Daily have put together a Look for Less taking inspiration from the red carpet at the Oscars and finding similar looks courtesy of Wet Seal.  I think they did a great job…and I’m too lazy to do one of my own…so here are their picks:

I personally LOVE the Mini Ruffle Dress (at the top, LOOK#1) – it looks so expensive compared to its retail price!  And the Rhinestone Hoop Earrings (LOOK #2) – are fab – rhinestones on the sides of the hoops rather than the front make for a great twist on this classic.

Who was your fave for Best Dressed at the Oscars?  (I loved J. Lo and Zoe Saldana!)

Hawaii Outfit 2: A Lotta Sauce

(Sauce tee, Bebe cardigan, Forever21 mirrored ribbon necklace and studded bangle bracelet, Hue footless tights, Rock & Republic destroyed denim shorts, Steve Madden flats, unknown skull-studded bag from Pineapple County)

Last day in Hawaii.  I met up with some old friends and had a blast!  It’s so wonderful to reconnect and find the odd little ways your lives have paralleled, even after years apart.  If you have an old friend who you haven’t heard from lately, definitely drop her/him a line and say hi!  New friends are dear, but old friends are dearest!

Edit: I just noticed that weird kid in the background grinning.  He seems a lot more thrilled than I look to be photographed, he he.

I liked the design of this Sauce shirt and bought it with a gift card to Saks Fifth Avenue.  The shirt is so cheaply constructed, though!  Worse than the worst of Forever21.

Edit: I was actually taxiing down the runway to take off on the plane back to Portland as I was typing the above.  I didn’t think I would actually get done with this post before they forced me to turn off my electronic device LOL!  But I managed to bang out the above…and decided later to add some more info.  The shirt’s side seams are overlocked with a simple double-needle; hems are raw.  Collar, instead of being made with ribbing, is done with self-fabric, turned, and finished with twin-needle overlock, so it stretches out the more you wear it.  The fabric is super-thin and 100% cotton – it feels and looks utterly cheap to the touch.  (Unlike my beloved Kain label tee – which is a blend of silk – and truly feels luxurious.)  This shirt feels like it will disintegrate in sunlight…or in the washing machine!  Ugh.  So not worth $70!  (The only rationalization I can make for its price is that the oversized screenprint (thus requiring non-standard sizded screens) necessitates a higher screenprinting fee??  But I think this is one example of the consumer paying the jacked-up price of label luxury – i.e., the brand of the shirt is its cache, not the quality.)  I think it’s funny how the skeleton’s pelvis is quite higher than the wearer’s.  Hub calls it my “midget skeleton” shirt.  In my mind it’s also an ironic commentary on the current INness of skinniness in the fashion industry…could this be the current ideal of the female body??  hehehe.  It kind of reminds me of those shirts they sell at Spencer’s Gifts or in raunchy catalogs as beach cover-ups with an airbrushed hot chick’s bikini body on them….in sizes XL – XXXL only…except this is the other extreme.;-)I haven’t been in the habit of wearing black tights under my shorts, but here in Hawaii after the earthquake in Chile it’s been super-, super-windy.  Almost hurricane weather.  Of course I didn’t anticipate this and didn’t bring any warm clothes or long pants; so I tried layering these tights under my shorts, doing the whole Japanese-tourist-in-Hawaii-outfit.  If you’ve ever been to Honolulu, you’ve probably noticed that all the young Japanese girls are layering black leggings or tights under their jean minis or shorts.  For warmth?  To hide the non-tanned state of their legs?  To hide other leg imperfections?  To be more modest even in a tropical climate that almost necessitates the showing of skin?  I suppose one will never know…it’s a sort of a micro-trend here on the islands amongst the tourists from Asian countries.  And me haha!

Hope you guys all had a great weekend!
