In March I was thrilled to find out I had been selected to participate in the PLAID and Martha Stewart Crafts Mother’s Day Campaign…and would be receiving a GIANT box of crafting supplies to make a DIY gift for Mother’s Day! I shared an unboxing video of all the generous items sent to me here, and like a giddy kid in a candy store began brainstorming ideas to make something wonderful, beautiful, and special with all my loot.
Then, a week after I received all the supplies, my mother had a stroke and was hospitalized.

Though technically seen backstage at the Fall 2012 runway show in Milan…I couldn’t resist DIY’ing these Dolce & Gabbana sunnies for Spring. After all, this year it’s all about flowers and pastels…and what could be better than pastel flowers adorning your sunglasses??!

If you want to go about making these, you have a couple options.
Honestly, WTF DIY’d a similar headband from this collection a little while ago using pre-made resin flowers. Totally easy to get – just search on Etsy for resin flowers and there will be a bunch that are pastel and pretty.
But I wanted control over the flowers – I wanted sprays of buds and super-large roses and leaves – so the solution was of course to DIY. Here’s how: (more…)

So how fantastic was Honestly, WTF‘s reinvention of the sunglasses case into a DIY Alexander McQueen-inspired box clutch last year? I think it’s safe to say that we all loved it – and all went out to the nearest store in search of a hard-sided sunglasses case forthwith.
However, I got to thinking: why not use something that may already be in your closet to make this?
Enter the velveteen jewelry box: often when we ladies receive or buy a piece of beautiful jewelry, it’s housed in its own velour-lined box. And those boxes are so pretty! Why not reinvent them?
I’ve held on to most of my velour jewelry boxes, not because I use them to store jewelry in still (I use flocked jewelry trays that stores use in their display cases), but because I thought to use them again somehow. And some of them were sentimental to me.
Take this shell-shaped velour box – it used to hold a string of my grandmother’s pearls that I received when she passed away. The insides of the box had gotten old, deformed, stained, and crumbly over time…but the outside was still quite pretty. I thought it very Art Deco. A super-easy addition to any outfit, this sweet little gathered peplum is reminiscent of the Jil Sander S/S 2011 collection (the one with all the bright-colored gathered maxi-skirts evoking tulips and flowers). You can wear it with the coordinating maxi-skirt, or alone over jeans, a pencil skirt, or an LBD. It’s also super-easy to make! Here’s how:

Another one of my tutorials was featured on the ILoveToCreate blog this week, so I’ve reposted the tutorial here for everyone who might want to try it out! I received a question about how to make a necklush [those looped fabric scarves that have gotten popular recently] a little while ago, and when I went to search for a tutorial that I’d read a couple years back, I found that the tutorial was gone and the blog no longer existed!! So I decided to write (er, re-write) the how-to. Granted, I don’t have a lovely Necklush in front of me so I can’t say exactly how they’re made…but this is my best DIY approximation, which includes a little side-fringe for those who like fringes.
